about

One of my favorite songs of all time, I really, really like how this one turned out.
Ed was a customer at the store I worked for almost seven years.
He would come in and chat and tell me stories from his time in Vietnam and how everyone he knew from his time there had died from cancer.
In the time I knew Ed, his brother was diagnosed with, and died from cancer, then one day Ed came up to me and said:"Well Dave, I've got it now, too...cancer..."
Then, over the next couple of months, I saw Ed get thinner and weaker and then he stopped coming in.
One day, his brother called me and told me Ed had died.
He also told me that Ed had instructed him to call me, once he died. His brother told me Ed had appreciated our conversations so much...

lyrics

Ed is standing in the parking lot,
he says: "I don't have long, I can feel the dark..."
He went with his brother to Vietnam
"Of all the kids I knew, I'm the only one left..."
he says that's gonna change real soon,
he says "Give me a couple of full moon's..."
I see him once and I see him twice,
he says "Dave, my man, I'm a fading light..."
and one day he's just bone and skin
and that's the last time Ed came in.
One day his brother's on the phone,
telling me that Ed has moved on...

Your father, in a distant youth,
looks just like you, man, just like you
he probably also got drunk and high
and laid out, looking at the sky
Sometimes when I watch the stars, I cry
it just comes over me, I don't know why...
It's just the feeling that your life runs by...
