about

The first job I was able to get after moving from Sweden to Austin was as a parking attendant for St.David's Episcopal Church in downtown Austin. I worked there for a few months in the winter 09/10, and I saw a lot of interesting things...the homeless lining up for the shelter around the corner, drunk and stoned people going out for a night on the town, the light and hopefulness in their eyes, the ones stumbling home in the early morning, the Frost Bank tower like a shining beacon, the big black guy by the name of Gus, who cleaned the garage every night, the empty streets and the drive home to get a few hours of sleep...

lyrics

"I see them on the corner, all standing in line,
waiting for a hot meal and a place to spend the night
I feel it in my fingers as the wind begins to blow,
nothing lasts forever, it's just the way it goes
and Catherine steps in through the door and she opens up her mouth, she tries to tell me something, but not a word comes out, she write me little notes and as I read, I understand; Catherine walks among us, but she lives in another land...
And Gus comes in early, he likes to get a good start,
he sleeps there on a chair in the office at St.David's garage,
as the night falls and the cars are pulling in; I see all these people and their eyes are full of dreams
And I wake up Sunday morning, it's like I'm running short of air, as if in the middle of the ocean, with water everywhere...I'm in a tiny boat and I am trying to sit still
just one sudden movement and it's all over...

Soon the night is over in St.David's Garage, Trinity is quiet and the sun is climbing up,
I pull the blinds and lock the door and make my way back home, the Frost Bank building like a beacon on the horizon and I zigzag between the dreamers, all walking alone
nothing lasts forever, today is already gone...
and I wake up in the morning and the sun is shining through
I hear the cars on Enfield as I lay there next to you,
nothing lasts forever darling, I know that it's true
but if it lasts for just one moment, then it's all good,
if it lasts for just one moment, then it's all good..."
